CyberPass represents a step change in support for online safety education, turning received wisdom about lesson sequencing on its head. TRUSTnet is providing teachers with a trackable, data-rich, competence-based online safety assessment and training tool, but at the heart of this innovation is a new approach.

Rather than delivering a series of lessons on predefined topics and then testing pupils on their abilities, CyberPass helps teachers identify strengths and weaknesses in the first instance, in order to target time and resources on the topics that children really need support for.

This is done by a series of online student assessments on eight different themes:

  • Settings and updates
  • Protecting privacy
  • Searching and researching
  • Socialising and gaming
  • Communicating safely
  • Friends and others
  • Money and credit

Questions are phrased in different ways to truly assess their competence and teachers are encouraged to establish the competencies of children prior to engaging them in the issues. Once established children can engage in focussed work using materials from the tried and tested online safety portal Us Online, which will help them learn more about the areas in which they are found to be weaker.

A key area of the CyberPass resource is the Teacher Dashboard. Here, a teacher can monitor the progress of each student, with graphs and tables showing progress measured against the rest of the class, rest of the school and, where data has been released to TRUSTnet, other schools. Equally, there is a breakdown of problematic questions for individual pupils and the group as a whole, plus instances of pupils needing to retake a test. The dashboard provides a range of data that a teacher needs in order to tailor lessons to pupils’ individual needs. Not spending time on areas of strength will enable greater progress overall and as a result maintain engagement and motivation.

Access to Learning Resources both in and away from school site is freely available with a TRUSTnet Core Service subscription.
