Maths in the Real World is a transition resource for Key Stage 2-3. The activities are ideal for use either before or after the move from Primary to Secondary, and detailed differentiation ensures there is something for all ability levels. It has been carefully designed in line with the National Curriculum and natural mathematical learning; this helps equip pupils for their continued Secondary studies, as well as honing the life skill of problem-solving!

The resource was made possible by the passion of Grahame Smart, Maths AST and brains behind the annual Mathspeak conference, and Oli Trussell, Google Certified Innovator / Trainer and expert in flipped learning. Grahame and Oli have been masters of real-world Maths in schools for many years, and were teaching problem-solving when it was just a sensible approach to Maths, as opposed to today's curriculum buzzword. But they believe passionately that this is the best way to effectively teach and learn.

The real-world topics covered in the resource are:

  • Algorithms
  • Arena and Events
  • Nutrition
  • Round the World
  • Speed Camera Investigation
  • Sporting Decisions

In recognition of the high uptake of interactive-whiteboard software by Maths teachers, presentations in Maths in the Real World are not only available in PowerPoint, but also in Smart .notebook and ActiveInspire .flipchart formats. This adds to the flexibility and potential of the resource – if you adapt these materials successfully within your school, why not drop us a line to let us know: contentsupport@lgfl.org.uk

Access to Learning Resources both in and away from school site is freely available with a TRUSTnet Core Service subscription.
