The RADwaste project has been designed to provide support for Key Stage 4 examination classes thorough stakeholder role play and decision-making exercises.

Managing the UK’s nuclear waste legacy

RADwaste is a unique resource that poses challenging questions about the management of radioactive waste in the UK. The resource does not explore the relative benefits and disadvnaatges of nuclear power as an energy source. Instead, the curriculum material features videos of the actual members of the government committee on radioactive waste management talking about the issues surrounding the management of radioactive waste in the UK.

The LGfL 'RADwaste' project has been created to challenge schools throughout London and across the UK - to engage with the highly complex issues surrounding nuclear waste management in the UK. The project has been created to provide a challenging mix of online and offline resources for use in and out of the classroom. The project is designed to support a wide range of approaches for teachers, however - the central aim of the project is to promote debating activities within and between schools. With careful guidance, teachers and students should be able to recreate aspects of the CoRWM approach in their own school context.

'It's not often you get to make decisions that can last longer than a lifetime!'

The focus of the LGfL'RADwaste' Project is not to investigate the issue of whether new nuclear power stations should be built in the UK - although teachers may wish to pursue this question with students. Comprehensive support for behaviour management and role play is contained throughout the resource - including teacher guidance videos. Pilot school case study videos show how London schools have used the RADwaste project to recruit more students into GCSE Geography and help raise attainment in exam classes.

Access to Learning Resources both in and away from school site is freely available with a TRUSTnet Core Service subscription.
